TikTok is currently working on adding a hate button for video comments; but, this feature will not truly benefit users.

TikTok, like any other public social media platform, has its fair share of unpleasant comments, but it’s been working on a dislike button which (in theory) make identifying those comments a little easier. However, clicking that dislike button won’t make those offending comments disappear.

The new button which bears the same appearance of a stylized “thumbs-down” which sit next to the button in the shape of a heart that says “Like,” is comparable to other platforms’ buttons that perform the same purpose and have the same appearance.

According to the TikTokComms Twitter account, The objective is to provide the community a more direct way of mass-sharing feedback to the service itself. Feedback on what’s considered “irrelevant or inappropriate,” which TikTok says it will use to “promote a comment section for genuine and authentic interactions.”

Comments that have been disliked won’t be removed (unless they are reported and found to be deserving of it, presumably), and the number of dislikes won’t be published. In addition, the number of dislikes will not be displayed.

At least for the time being, TikTok has stated that it plans to use this solely as a metric for it to look at in order to provide a “better experience” for the community it serves.

The company has not provided any specifics around what that better experience means or exactly how it will utilize dislike data. Do comments need to hit a particular number before it takes the dislikes seriously? Will comments with enough dislikes be removed by TikTok itself? Is there a system in place if a comment gets incorrectly or unfairly mass-disliked? For now, we don’t know.

The ability to dislike comments posted on TikTok are currently rolling out through a global release, though a more precise timeframe hasn’t been provided.
